June 2, 2017 - MSHA has scheduled a stakeholder meeting at the National Health and Safety Academy, in Beckley, West Virginia, on Thursday, June 8, 2017 to discuss the fatalities that have occurred at the nation’s coal mines in 2017 and the fact that about one-half of the coal deaths since 2016 have occurred in southern West Virginia. An initiative is being developed in an attempt to prevent fatalities and injuries. 

Patricia W. Silvey, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Operations, will open the meeting to discuss the initiative, make general remarks, and provide information regarding our regulatory process. Later in the morning, our Office of Technical Support will make a presentation on upstream construction of impoundments.

The meeting begins at 9:00 a.m. EST in the Academy’s auditorium. We encourage all coal stakeholders to attend.
