March 1, 2018 - Fenner Dunlop has introduced a new method of installing roof bolts above conveyors at the North Goonyella underground coking coal mine, 160km west of Mackay in Queensland.

The system, called the Mobile Bolting Working Platform, replaces the previous method of building scaffolding over conveyors for operators to install roof bolts as part of the longwall mining process, a critical structural procedure to ensure the roof does not collapse due to geological changes incurred during mining. The new system has resulted in improvements to safety and efficiency at the mine.

Fenner Dunlop worked with Peabody Energy, the world’s largest coal miner, to develop this custom system. The mobile platform is positioned on wheels above the conveyor and is operated by remote control via air winch, which further improves safety as the operator does not have to be near the conveyor while moving the platform along its length.

The Mobile Bolting Working Platform also includes failsafe braking, storage facilities, bolting points and handrails to ensure additional operational safety. Fenner Dunlop is currently working on a second unit for delivery to a New South Wales coal mine client by the end of 2018.
