March 13, 2018 - Searches for cost effective, alternate sources of power generation outside of fossil fuels have to date not been proven successful in South Africa, and therefore, the country’s fossil future remains firmly grounded in coal says the Chamber of Mines.

It also estimates that at current rates of production, South Africa has reserves sufficient to satisfy its needs for more than a century.

This is important news for coal processing equipment suppliers – including major role player Vibramech.

Vibramech is a world leader in the manufacture and supply of high-quality vibrating equipment to the mineral processing industry and has a vast number of vibratory machines presently operating in the coal processing industry in South Africa.

A significant percentage of the screens supplied to coal-related projects have been manufactured under the Siebtechnik license, and more specifically the supply of 4.3 m-wide screens to both local (African) and overseas coal projects.

Vibramech has also developed a comprehensive range of Multislope (or Banana) screens, horizontal and inclined screens, dewatering screens, grizzly feeders, pan feeders, tubular feeders and grease tables.

In addition, it has supplied eight Hein-Lehmann Liwell screens to South Africa’s major Waterberg coal producer and another two machines to a coal producer in Mpumalanga. Vibramech is the southern African licensee for Liwell screens.

These machines have been designed specifically to screen fines from a ‘sticky’ feed in a dry screening operation, and have a worldwide reputation for being the market leader in this field.

The Southern African Coal Processing Society recognized Vibramech’s contribution to the coal processing industry by awarding MD David Massey with the ‘Coal Man of the Year’ award in 2016.

“We are proud of our contribution to the coal industry. It was on 11 June 1982 when we received our first screen order for delivery to the Greenside colliery on behalf of Apex Mines (then owned by Gold Fields of South Africa)," explains Massey.

"The order was for a 40 tph heavy-duty 2.4 x 0.6 m low head screen complete with polyurethane decks, and two 4-pole vibratory motors. The total cost of this order was just R4 404-75,” he recalls.

All equipment is manufactured in-house by Vibramech, in its factory in Chamdor, 35 km west of Johannesburg.

Almost every piece of equipment is tailor-made to suit a client’s specific requirements, from both a plant layout viewpoint and process considerations.

A present staff complement of 200 control all activities from sales through to engineering and manufacturing.

All equipment is designed and manufactured by Vibramech without the use of manufacturing subcontractors. This ensures complete control over quality and scheduling.

Furthermore, its flexible and practical approach to screen design enables the client to optimise the vibrating equipment geometry to suit its specific requirements, resulting in tailor-made equipment.

Vibramech’s field services department continues to service all equipment supplied into the field. It also has established a regional office in eMalahleni to service new and existing clients in Steelpoort and Mpumalanga areas.

The appointment of further locally based regional representatives for the Northern Cape, North West and Limpopo provinces are in the pipeline for 2018.
