April 18, 2018 - Several new mines are scheduled to open in West Virginia in 2018.

According to Raleigh County Commission Pres. Dave Tolliver, at least three different operations have applied for permits.

One of the mines is an Alpha Natural Resources metallurgical operation in Moncoal. A spokesperson for the company said Wednesday the mine is one of the thickest high volume seams in their portfolio --  holding about 13 million tons of met coal. The spokesperson said the company is hoping for completion of the Moncoal operation by the end of the year, bringing at least 60 new jobs to the area.

The other two operations are run by Pocahontas Coal. One is a high wall operation in Josephine and the other is a prep plant near Rhodell. No timeline has been set for the opening of the Pocahontas operations.
