MSHA Accepting Brookwood-Sago Applications

July 20, 2018 - The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) will accept applications for its Brookwood-Sago Mine Safety Grant Program, Funding Opportunity Announcement No. BS-2018-1, starting July 23. The deadline to submit applications for this competitive grant program is August 23. MSHA is distributing up to $250,000 in grant funds to states, territorial, and tribal governments, and private or public nonprofit entities.

Established by the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act of 2006, the program promotes mine safety in honor of the 25 miners who died in 2001 in Brookwood, Alabama, at the Jim Walter Resources #5 mine, and in 2006 in Buckhannon, West Virginia, at the Sago Mine.

Grantees will use the funds to provide education and training programs on powered haulage safety, examinations of working places at metal and nonmetal mines, or mine emergency prevention and preparedness.

The minimum and maximum amounts of each individual grant are $50,000 and $250,000, respectively. For more information on this grant program and application submission, go to www.grants.gov
