December 12, 2018 - The World Coal Association (WCA) has welcomed the publication of the Global Status of CCS: 2018 report calling on world leaders for enhanced support for CCS projects in order to meet the Paris Agreement targets.

The report, published by the Global CCS Institute (GCCSI), gives an overview of current international climate discussions, CCUS projects, policy and market developments, as well as key issues in the sector.

CCUS is widely recognized as a vital technology required to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and needs to play a greater role in climate action.

The talks in Katowice present an opportunity to build an international commitment on CCUS to ensure it is deployed at the scale needed to meet the Paris Agreement goals.

Welcoming the report, WCA Interim Chief Executive, Katie Warrick said:  “The Paris Agreement goal of limiting future temperature increases to ‘well below 2°C’ will require a significant reduction in emissions. Deploying CCUS is critical to this outcome and it is essential that we see a greater role for CCUS in longer-term climate plans. The International Energy Agency estimates that 14% of greenhouse gas reductions by 2060 will have to come from CCUS in order to meet a 2°C pathway.”

Since COP21, WCA has been calling on governments to move quickly to support low emission technologies, including CCUS.

“Action to advance CCUS needs an international commitment with a broad constituency of support", added Warrick.  "This is why the WCA recently launched its new report, “Driving CCUS deployment: The pathway to zero emissions from coal” calling for a step-change in international action to advance CCUS technologies. Over the next 18 months, countries are required to submit their long-term climate mitigation plans for action through to 2050. Embedding CCUS within the Paris Agreement infrastructure will provide a true indication of the importance of the technology.”
