February 20, 2019 - Peabody’s North Complex, which includes Caballo and Rawhide mines, recently received the President’s Award for the best U.S. surface mine safety performance in 2018.

“The proactive safety measures we have put in place here at North Complex have undoubtedly resulted in our improved safety record,” said Eric Martin, North Complex general manager. “We are proud to receive the President’s Award, but we know improving our safety performance is a never-ending journey.”

The incident rate at the two mines was .29 per 200,000 hours worked.

According to a press release Feb. 18, the North Complex had implemented an observation program that ensures employees are following proper safety protocol. Work is immediately halted if a mistake is made, and they use it as a teaching moment for the entire crew.

Employees are also encouraged to share incidents to serve as improvement opportunities for all employees.

“Safety is our first value at Peabody, and our employees at the mines take a great deal of pride in receiving the President’s Award for having the best safety record in the company,” said Peabody’s President of Americas Kemal Williamson. “The North Complex is a deserving winner, and we will learn from their success as we continue to improve safety practices across our organization.”

Peabody’s North Complex employs around 270 skilled workers, and according to the same release, sold around 20 million tons of coal from the two mines in 2018.
