October 13, 2019 - In New Mexico, the San Juan County Commission will consider issuing a letter supporting continued operations at the San Juan Mine.

Westmoreland Coal Co., the owner of San Juan Mine, has filed an application with the New Mexico Mining and Minerals Division for its permit to be renewed. That would allow the mine to continue supplying coal to the San Juan Generating Station for another five years.

The San Juan County Commission will discuss the letter of support when it meets at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the county administration building located at 100 S. Oliver Drive in Aztec.

In addition to discussing the mine permit, the San Juan County Commission may approve the Youth Homelessness Demonstration Project grant. This grant would assist people aging out of the juvenile justice system who would not otherwise have a place to live.

Other topics on the agenda include the County Road 5500 bridge and county maintenance of County Road 3634.

Other Meetings

The Farmington Metropolitan Redevelopment Area Commission will hear an update on the Between the Waters Trail when it meets at 4 p.m. Oct. 15 at HQ, 119 W. Main Street. Other agenda topics include an update on the Complete Streets project and discussion of local vendors at events.

The Farmington City Council will hear an update on the new Park Rangers program when it meets at 9 a.m. Oct. 15 at Farmington City Hall, 800 N. Municipal Drive.

The Central Consolidated School District Board of Education will meet at 4 p.m. Oct. 15 at Ojo Amarillo Elementary School in Fruitland. The agenda for the combined work session and board meeting had not been released by the morning of Oct. 11.
