January 23, 2020 - General Richard L. Lawson, well-known and very highly-respected in coal circles, and indeed in the entire mining community, has died at the age of 90.

Dick Lawson was President of the National Coal Association (NCA) for many years and oversaw the merger between N.C.A. and the American Mining Congress to form the National Mining Association as it is known today. He was an outstanding spokesman for the mining industry and built support for public policies that helped Americans fully benefit from our domestic coal resources. For many years, he was an active member of the Old Timers Club and the King Coal Club.

“During his long association with the coal industry, he gained the respect of everyone he came in contact with and there can be few leaders who have such ability as he had, to shine so brightly in not one, but two full careers,” said Bill Reid, Managing Editor, CoalZoom. “Dick was a great American, was admired and respected by all, and will be missed.”

The entire mining community sends its heartfelt condolences to Joan and the family.

Following his 70th wedding anniversary in August and his 90th birthday in December, Dick flew this life's final mission on January 20. He is celebrated and held in the hearts of his bride, Joan, their children, and grandchildren; and extended family of the USAF, the Armed Forces, the National Guard, and the mining community in which he was honored to serve and contribute. Services, burial and reception, will be held at Arlington Cemetery within the year. Date TBD.
