Welcome to the International Centre for Sustainable Carbon

July 3, 2021 - The IEA Clean Coal Centre has announced a new name – the International Centre for Sustainable Carbon (ICSC). As the role of coal, biomass and other carbon-based fuels changes and how they interact with variable renewable energy sources becomes more important, we continue to evolve too. The new name reflects this evolution and highlights our revised scope of activities in this dynamic energy landscape. We are taking this opportunity to demonstrate our breadth of expertise and align with our values and vision. Having always reflected and guided the changes that take place in the coal sector we will now include more biomass and other carbon-based fuels in our remit.

We are proud to remain a Technology Collaboration Programme under the auspices of the International Energy Agency.  The IEA Clean Coal Centre (IEACCC) was established 45 years ago and is the longest serving TCP. The Centre has always evolved to meet the requirements of its global stakeholders; as the ICSC, the work programme is now broader than it has ever been, both in terms of applicable carbon-based energy sources and the wide ranging/fast moving transformation of energy systems worldwide.

Our overall objective is to continue to provide definitive and policy relevant independent information on how various carbon-based energy sources can continue to be part of a sustainable energy mix worldwide. The energy sources include coal, biomass and organic waste materials. Our work is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which includes the need to address the climate targets as set out by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

More information about the International Centre for Sustainable Carbon will be released in the coming months and Dr Andrew Minchener, General Manager of the ICSC presents a webinar on 21 July which will formally launch the ICSC! Watch this space.
