March 9, 2023 - Allegiance Coal Ltd., the parent company of New Elk Coal Company in Weston, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, according to court record filed in the District of Delaware. The publicly traded company, which bought NECC in 2020 to revitalize the coking coal mine, filed the voluntary petition in late-February.
