Tug Valley Mining Institute Awards Annual $15,000 in Scholarships

 

 

May 30, 2016 - At the May 19, 2016, Tug Valley Mining Institute (TVMI) dinner meeting, six 2016 scholarship recipients were awarded.  The two top $6,000 scholarships were awarded to Carli Dotson, Phelps High and Tiffani Brewster, Tolsia High.  Four $750 scholarships were awarded to Annalyse Mann, Tolsia High;  Faith Hensley, Mingo Central; Corey France, Logan High; and Timothy Adkins, Belfry High.
 

The guest speaker was West Virginia gubernatorial governor candidate and owner of Bluestone and The Greenbrier, Jim Justice.  Mr. Justice encouraged the students to aim for their dreams.  He told everyone the coal industry is not dead and will be strong again.  He praised West Virginia for its beauty, hardworking people and abundant natural resources.  He stressed to the students that each of them could make a difference in the world.  Wright Concrete sponsored the meeting and has been a long-time supporter of the scholarship program.
 

Over the last eighteen years, TVMI has awarded 117 (one hundred and seventeen) students $273,250 in scholarship monies.  The TVMI scholarship is open to students from Mingo, Logan, Wayne, Pike, and Martin counties.  The applications are available in November of each year and may be obtained from Marsha Williams at the First National Bank of Williamson or from a TVMI board member.
