January 8, 2023 - Several people who were illegally digging a coal mine in West Bengal's Kulti are feared trapped after the roof of the mine collapsed on them on Sunday. The mine belongs to Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), and the people trapped were allegedly mining coal from the mine illegally.
Mine officials and police have reached the spot.
It is yet to be ascertained how many people are trapped in the mine collapse.
Rescue operations are underway.
Meanwhile, Lalon Mehra, a BJP councillor from the area, said local residents in the Kulti region are unemployed, and digging coal is a source of revenue for them. The coal they extract is negligible, the BJP member said, accusing the Trinamool Congress of promoting illegal coal trade.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) member Biman Dutt hit back saying coal is national property and accused the BJP of indulging in the illegal coal mining business.
