Underground Fire Idles West Virginia Mine

 

 

July 2, 2024 - Emergency officials in Barbour County, West Virginia report a coal mine has been closed due to an underground fire.


The incident happened at Allegheny Met Coal’s Long View Mine near the Barbour/Upshur County line on Sunday and forced a halt to production at this time.


The West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety, and Training issued a brief statement.


“The company is conducting various fire mitigation activities that should continue to suppress this fire. The OMHS&T and MSHA will be at the mine location around the clock taking air quality samples from all the mine openings. This will allow for further monitoring of fire activity, (whether it is growing or extinguishing) for example,” read the statement.


The company  has made no statement in regard to the incident.


There are no reports of any entrapment or injuries as a result of the incident.
