Globally, there are over 6,500 coal units (2,095 GW) in operation, more than 400 units (204.2 GW) under construction, and nearly 640 (353.3 GW) in development or announced.

Coal abatement technology has evolved, with the most efficient plants nearing 50% efficiency—well above the global average of 37.5%.

Emissions can be dramatically reduced through solutions like biofuel cofiring, ammonia use, CCUS, and supercritical CO2 cycles, paving the way for cleaner coal power.
