Missouri S&T Student Wins ACLCA

November 16, 2024 - A Missouri S&T Ph.D. student in mining engineering was awarded the 2024 Student LCA Leadership Award from the American Center for Life Cycle Assessment (ACLCA) during the organization’s 2024 annual conference in late September in Snowbird, Utah.

“It feels fantastic to be recognized by the ACLCA for my research focused on life cycle assessment,” says Philip Duah, of Ghana. “As a mining engineer, I understand that society will always need to engage in mining to obtain the raw materials we need for our modern economy. But we can and should determine the most sustainable methods to lower our environmental footprint.”

Duah has been a member of the ACLCA since he began his doctoral studies in Rolla last year and is a member of the organization’s Student/Early Career Committee.

The ACLCA
notes he was selected for the honor because of his “innovative research in sustainable construction and mining technologies.”

At Missouri S&T, Duah is focused on assessing the environmental implications of cement production as part of a National Science Foundation research project developing carbon-negative cement.

“We really must consider the full picture when doing work that will have an impact on the environment,” he says. “For my topic, this includes how the raw materials are obtained, the carbon emissions that come from processing, what technologies are available for decarbonization, what policies are in place and how they impact the environment, and everything else in-between.”
