WV County Monitors Longwall Mining Impact on Homes and Flood Risk to Schools

November 22, 2024 - The longwall mining by American Consolidated Natural Resource, which is affecting the structure of homes and buildings in Cameron, could also cause flooding.

Marshall County officials are keeping a close eye on the effects, specifically for Cameron Elementary students and staff.

A safety plan is in the works should flooding occur because of work taking place under the Upper Grave Creek dams.

"We take it as high priority because first of all, we have the Cameron community, but also, too, we're looking at it from the elementary school with 237 students and 40 staff inside the building,” Marshall County EMA Director Tom Hart said.

“And then also looking at the nursing home, which is downstream from the elementary school and then the possibility of 60 residents in that nursing home."

Another meeting is scheduled for December regarding the issue, as well as a roundtable with local officials in January.
