Coal River Group Continues to Make Waves in Southern West Virginia

January 6, 2025 The Coal River Group has been bustling with activity in recent months, furthering its mission to restore and promote the Coal River watershed.

The Coal River Group’s efforts impact several counties in southern West Virginia, including Boone. The group also focuses on parts of Kanawha, Raleigh, Lincoln, Logan and Putnam counties.

Here’s an update on their latest endeavors and achievements:

Community engagement and recognition

In September, the CRG hosted the Leadership Kanawha Valley Future Leaders’ group, with 25 aspiring leaders attending a comprehensive 7-hour session. Later that month, Bill Currey, a key figure in the organization, delivered informative speeches to members of the Regional Garden Club of America at the Charleston Capitol Market.

The CRG’s efforts were formally recognized on Oct. 1 when they received an award for their environmental achievements at a dinner attended by 150 members of the Regional Garden Club of America at the Clay Center.

Hatfield-McCoy Program Success

The Coal River Center has seen significant success with its Hatfield-McCoy program:

  • As of Oct. 14, 173 residential permits and 217 non-residential permits have been sold.
  • Visitors from various states, including Kentucky, Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, Utah, New York, Florida, Maryland, and California, have sought permits and information about the CRG Water Trail.

As the Coal River Group continues to expand its reach and impact, it remains a vital force in the restoration and promotion of Southern West Virginia’s natural resources.

The Coal River Group has launched its 2024-25 fund drive, calling on community support to further its mission of maintaining the beauty of the Coal River and bringing new visitors and investments to the region. “This annual fundraising effort is crucial for the organization to continue its impactful work in restoring habitats, improving water quality, expanding public access to the river and promoting tourism in the area,” Currey said.

Those interested in supporting the CRG’s efforts can make tax-deductible donations, as the organization is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit. Contributions can be made through the CRG’s website, coalrivergroup.com, where donors can choose from various giving options.
