Coal Miner Dies In Raleigh County, WV; 2nd Fatality In State This Year
March 4, 2025 - A coal miner was killed on the job Friday in Raleigh County, WV.
Friday’s death of a coal miner at the Black Eagle mine is the second this year in West Virginia.
The mine is operated by Marfork Coal Company, a subsidiary of Alpha Natural Resources, based in Bristol, Tennessee.

A statue commemorating West Virginia's coal miners sits outside the State Capitol in Charleston.
Alpha is one of the nation’s top producers of metallurgical coal, the kind used to make steel.
The incident comes a month after the death of Steven Fields, a drill operator, at the Twilight Surface Mine in Boone County.
There have been four coal mine fatalities this year, according to the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration, including one in Pennsylvania and one in Ohio.
MSHA is investigating Friday’s incident.
