Volvo Penta New BESS Subsystem for Construction and Manufacturing

March 7, 2025 - Volvo Penta, the Sweden-based integrated power supply manufacturer part of Volvo Group, has announced a new subsystem for its battery energy storage system (BESS). It claims to be more transportable and have fast charging benefits.

The BESS subsystem is aimed at the construction and mining industries, where grid capacity is outweighed by demand, it claims.

It is designed for system integrators and BESS manufacturers for microgrid scenarios such as quarries and urban restoration sites.

Equipment can be charged on-site or relocated for charging without disrupting operations, it said.

The BESS subsystem will also be able to be used with stationary equipment, such as hydraulics and crushing mechanisms. This will include use in electric excavators, wheel loaders, and crushers, it said.

It will come with a C-rated battery pack, which it said is derived from the same battery packs for on and off-highway use from Volvo Group.

The subsystem is said to have features such as:

- a DC/DC converter for auxiliary power

- a telematics gateway for real-time monitoring

- and a thermal management system to optimise performance in various conditions.

It is also claimed the subsystem has an IP class rating against corrosion and dust.

It said each BESS subsystem covers the DC energy supply, while original equipment manufacturers will be able to handle the AC setup, container integration, and configure systems to their needs.

Volvo Penta say that the subsystem is production ready, having been extensively prototyped and tested with customers.
