U.S. Coal Plant Retirements Set to Tighten Natural Gas Supply as Power Demand Rises
March 9, 2025 - U.S. power generators this year are planning to retire 8.1 GW of coal-fired power generation capacity, more than double the amount in 2024, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).
The soon-to-be shuttered plants equal 4.7% of the country’s total operating coal fleet as of the end of 2024, EIA researchers said.
“Coal retirements decreased to 4.0 GW last year, less than the 9.8 GW of coal capacity retired in each of the last 10 years,” the EIA team said.
