Mining Accident in Boone County, WV Leaves One Man Dead

June 14, 2017 - The West Virginia Office of Miners Health, Safety and Training has confirmed a fatal incident at Rockwell Mining LLC, Gateway Eagle Mine in Boone County, West Virginia on Tuesday at 8:47 p.m.


The victim, Rodney S. Osborne, 32, of Artie, was operating a continuous miner.


Samantha Smith, Director of Marketing and Communications for MHST said they are not able to release many details right now, but will release them as they become available.


MHST inspectors have started their investigation, and the mine is idle at this time.


Gov. Jim Justice, in a prepared statement released Wednesday, "Cathy and I are heartbroken with the sad news out of Wharton that we have lost another member of our West Virginia coal mining community. We ask all West Virginians to join us in praying for the family and friends of this young man. Our state is so grateful for our miners and their families and we know they are coming together in support during this difficult time."

 

Sen. Joe Manchin also released statement, saying, "Our coal miners and their families make unthinkable sacrifices, day in and day out, to keep our state and nation strong. Today, as we mourn the loss of Rodney Osborne in Boone County, we come together to lift up his family, friends, coworkers and loved ones in prayer. As West Virginians, the loss of one of our own is felt in every corner of the state. Gayle and I join all West Virginians in holding the Osborne family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."
