Mass Rallies in Support of Coal Miners Continue in Northern Morocco

January 3, 2018 - Mass protests continued in the Moroccan mining city of Jerada on Tuesday, as demonstrators demanded justice and better living conditions after the death of two coal miners last month. Activists chanted, asking the government to provide better security in the mines, and calling for the implementation of measures against poverty. Locals have dubbed the coal pits ‘mines of death’ as hundreds of people risk their lives every day, digging in dangerous conditions.

The rallies have been taking place since December 22, when two brothers aged 23 and 30 died after an abandoned coal mine collapsed on them.
