Celebrating 25 Years of the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum

June 23, 2019 - If you live in Eastern Kentucky, you probably know someone who worked in the coal industry.

As some cool mines shut down, it's important for folks in Benham to keep the tradition alive.

"We are just celebrating 25 years of sharing the history of coal mining with the community and everybody," says Curator of the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum Amanda Hughes.

Giving people from out of town or right next door a taste of history from way back then.

"I feel like it makes people believe that they are no different to anybody else from here," says Phyllis Sizemore, who has worked at the museum for 20 years.

Though much has changed in 25 years, sharing the love and history for coal mining will always remain.

"I mean it's just constantly growing," added Hughes.

If you would like to visit the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum, it is open on Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
