City of Roanoke, VA to Repair Railroad After Overnight Train Derailed

January 3, 2024 - The City of Roanoke, Virginia says it is repairing a railroad and power line parallel to U.S. Highway 377 after an overnight train derailed on Tuesday, which caused several rail crossings to be shut down.

The Roanoke Fire Department said three cars loaded with coal and a locomotive derailed at about 3:30 a.m. There are no reported injuries, and crews are working to clear the scene, according to the fire department.

At about 8:30 a.m., the crossings were reopened, and at about 9:21 a.m., southbound 377 was reopened except for one lane that remained closed between Houston and Main.

City officials said all areas of repair should be done within 24 hours.

Roanoke Police said drivers should expect delays and seek alternate routes.

The city said Roanoke Police and Fire Departments worked with Union Pacific Railroad to ensure the safety of Roanoke citizens and community members. There are no anticipated long-term impacts of this incident.
