Our coal is the best in the nation and the world: Compared to the other steam or thermal coal from the Illinois Basin, Powder River Basin (Wyoming) and the Western Bituminous region, Mountain State coal from the northern and southern regions of the state burns hotter with less emissions.

Compared to other steam coals from around the word, West Virginia’s thermal quality beats Russian, Indonesian, Columbian, Newcastle (Australian) and South African (Richards Bay) coal.

West Virginia leads the nation in international exports of coal.
