EIA's Electric Power Monthly and Electricity Monthly Update—January 2024

 

 

January 25, 2024 - EIA has released the January 2024 Electricity Monthly Update with data for November 2023. The following are some highlights:

 

  • New 12-month electricity system demand lows were set in California (CAISO) on November 23 and in Progress Energy’s region in Florida on November 24.

 

  • Wholesale electricity prices were highest during November 2023 in the Northwest, peaking at $117 per megawatthour (MWh) at Mid-Continent on November 30. Electricity prices were lowest in the Midwest (MISO) and Louisiana (into Entergy), remaining below $45/MWh throughout the month at both locations.

 

  • Total U.S. coal stockpiles had a month-over-month increase of 6.8%, reaching 131 million tons in November 2023. This amount represents the highest total U.S. coal stockpiles since 2020.

EIA has released the January 2024 Electric Power Monthly with data for November 2023. The following are some highlights:

 

  • Net generation in the United States was unchanged from November 2022.

 

  • Consumption of natural gas for power generation was up 6.0% compared with November 2022.

 

  • The average residential retail price of electricity was up 4.1% from November 2022.
