Coal Fact for the Day: No Substitution for Fuel

February 1, 2024 - In early 2023, electric grid operator PJM published a report quantifying the ability of different generation sources to provide the electricity needed in its 13-state operating footprint. As part of the analysis, PJM calculated the “energy equivalents” of substituting intermittent energy for baseload generation sources like coal power plants. You can read the entire report here https://www.pjm.com/-/media/library/reports-notices/special-reports/2023/energy-transition-in-pjm-resource-retirements-replacements-and-risks.ashx

Using PJM’s analysis and generation equivalency allows for a calculation of the amount of intermittent generation that would be needed to replace the 12,600-megawatt generating capacity of West Virginia’s nine coal fired power plants.
