Request for Public Comment on Proposed Cryptocurrency Mining Facilities Survey

February 13, 2024The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) is proposing a data collection using Form EIA-862, Cryptocurrency Mining Facilities Survey, to quantify key metrics of cryptocurrency mining energy consumption in the United States. The original collection was approved by the Office of Management and Budget on January 26, 2024, under the emergency approval provisions of the Paperwork Reduction Act.

Cryptocurrency mining represents a recent and significant source of electricity demand. Consistent with EIA’s mission to collect, analyze, and disseminate independent and impartial energy information, EIA proposes this survey to meet an important industry information need.

The EIA-862 will collect energy data from companies that operate U.S. cryptocurrency mining facilities.  These data are intended to inform the capacity and use of electricity, along with the sources of the energy, so that the environmental effects of this activity can be assessed.

Federal Register Notice (FRN) was issued on February 9, 2024, seeking public comment on Form EIA-862. You can view this form, along with EIA’s other forms, at EIA.gov. The FRN asks the public to submit comments by April 9, 2024.
