February 29, 2024 - Last week, American steelmakers fired, cast, and forged 1.7 million tons of iron and steel using 1.3 million tons of metallurgical coal.

Met coal from the Mountain State accounted for 897,000 tons of the coal used last week to make the highest quality, strongest American steel. 

West Virginia is the nation’s largest producer of metallurgical coal, the largest supplier of met coal to the domestic steel industry and the largest met coal exporting state in the nation. 

Every coke oven, blast furnace, steel furnace, foundry and smelter in North America receives shipments of West Virginia met coal.
