New EPA Carbon Emission Rule Threatens West Virginia's Coal Industry, Leaders React

April 26, 2024 - The EPA announced a final ruling affecting carbon emission from coal-fired electricity on Thursday morning.

West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice and West Virginia Coal Association President and CEO Chris Hamilton say the announcement directly affects West Virginia.

Both made an appearance at Independence Hall in Wheeling to discuss what the announcement could pose -- the potential shutdown of coal and natural gas-fired plants.

"The EPA has weaponized against you, against me, against our way of life in West Virginia," Justice said.

"You have done so much for so many. It's off the chart and what you ask for is almost nothing ever."

"We're going to go after these rules,” Hamilton said. “We're going to go after them with every legal arsenal we have. We're going to push and pressure Congress to reject these rules."

Hamilton adds that he plans to utilize the Congressional Review Act to possibly overturn the agency's announcement. Congress must withhold a majority vote
