Asia Leads in Coal and Emissions Technology, Paving the Way for Clean Energy
December 1, 2024 - Asia is setting new benchmarks in coal and emissions technologies, signaling a shift towards redefining clean energy. In India, FutureCoal member Coal India Limited, in partnership with GAIL Ltd, is moving forward with plans to establish a Coal to Synthetic Natural Gas plant. The facility is expected to produce 633.6 million Nm³ annually, utilizing 1.9 million tonnes of coal.
Meanwhile, China has made a significant commitment to reducing its environmental impact by pledging to halve emissions from all coal-fired power plants by 2027. Key abatement technologies that China is implementing include:
1. Mixing coal with biomass.
2. Mixing coal with green ammonia derived from renewables-based hydrogen.
3. Deploying carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies.
China and India are approaching coal differently—prioritising self-reliance while addressing efficiencies, emissions reduction, and waste management. This aligns with FutureCoal’s Sustainable Coal Stewardship framework, which supports coal-producing and consuming nations in adopting advanced, responsible practices. FutureCoal is actively informing and advocating for policy setting that is pragmatic and unbiased, while recognising the essential role of coal and its technologies in sustainable development.
