Electric Power Monthly and Electricity Monthly Update—February 2025
February 26, 2025 - We have released the February 2025 Electricity Monthly Update with data for December 2024. The following are some highlights:
- In New England, spikes occurred in both wholesale electricity and natural gas prices during December due to below-average temperatures that increased demand for both electricity and natural gas during December 2024.
- Southern Company saw a large spread in its peak demand range, spanning from around 50% to over 80% of its 12-month peak demand range during the month of December.
- Total U.S. coal stockpiles decreased by 2.4% to 128 million tons compared with the previous month.

We have released the February 2025 Electric Power Monthly with data for December 2024. The following are some highlights:
- Net generation in the United States increased 3.4% from December 2023.
- Consumption of coal for power generation was up 10.6% compared with December 2023.
- The average residential retail price of electricity was up 3.6% from December 2023.
