Wyoming Governor Gordon Signs Bill Lowering Wyoming Coal Severance Taxes

February 27, 2025 - Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon on Monday signed into law a long list of bills approved by lawmakers during the ongoing 2025 session of the Wyoming Legislature.

Among the items signed by Gordon was House Bill 75, which lowers the coal severance tax rate from 6.5 to percent 5 percent. A news release from Gordon's office say it brings the tax rate for coal in line with the Wyoming severance tax rate for oil and gas.

Gordon also signed into law House Bill 54, which allows some circuit and district court cases to be heard by chancery court judges. Chancery court in Wyoming traditionally deals with business, commercial and trust cases. House Bill 54 attempts to lighten the caseload of district and circuit court judges.
