Nearly 300 Additional Coal Jobs to be Cut in Southern West Virginia by August
June 26, 2025 - Civil LLC, a coal-related company based in Beckley, has announced it will lay off 279 workers at nine facilities across southern West Virginia, with job cuts set to take effect August 2, 2025.
According to notices filed with WorkForce West Virginia, the layoffs will impact employees at processing and transportation sites in five counties.
The company stated that all affected workers have already been notified, and the layoffs are expected to be permanent.
The largest number of layoffs—155 positions—will come from the CV2 mine in Fayette County, where 135 jobs will be cut, including 20 at a nearby prep plant.
The company will also close the Delbarton Prep Plant in Mingo County, eliminating 44 jobs, and the Eagle Energy mine in Kimberly (Fayette County), affecting 33 workers.
Other facilities and layoffs include:
Stella facility in Kermit (Mingo County): 2 jobs
Pine Creek facility in Omar (Logan County): 1 job
Page Loadout facility in Kincaid (Fayette County): 2 jobs
Falcon facility in Van (Boone County): 7 jobs
Beckley Mechanic Shop (Raleigh County): 15 jobs
Civil LLC did not give a reason for the layoffs in its notification.
The announcement comes after nearly 200 coal mine employees received layoff notices at the Core Natural Resources Itmann Mine in Wyoming County.
Following the news of the layoffs, West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey released a statement to LOOTPRESS Thursday morning:
“It is always painful to hear of layoffs affecting West Virginians. The hard-working men and women of our coal industry have powered our state and nation for generations, and my administration is committed to utilizing our vast energy resources to retain and attract good-paying jobs to West Virginia. We will keep pushing to get as many of these folks back to work as quickly as possible.”
