November 1, 2025 - Followers of CoalZoom, particularly in the United States, will be most interested to learn of the upcoming publication of the booklet commemorating the life and times of British industrialist, Sir George Dowty, 1901—1975. Among the many inventions of Sir George was the hydraulic pit prop, which was first introduced in 1946 and revolutionized the science of roof support technology. The design was based on the Dowty hydraulic undercarriage of Lancaster bombers used extensively in World War II, and the application of hydraulics in underground coal mines brought about the controlled yielding of the roof after the coal was mined. The booklet includes a tribute to Sir George by his son as well as a number of articles on his boyhood, his fascination with the game of cricket, and his formation and leadership of the Dowty company named after him. There are also articles on Dowty-the Man and Dowty-the Chief. The booklet includes numerous photos of events during his very full and exciting life. The front cover shows the Dowty flag, designed for the 1936 Paris Air Show, flying at the 18th century farm house in Wiltshire, England, which has a stature of Sir George Dowty on its driveway Sir George is fondly remembered for his many inventions and it is fitting that this booklet is published to commemorate not only his passing but also his enormous contributions to British industry and that of the world. Copies of the booklet entitled “50 Years, Sir George Dowty” may be obtained by emailing Martin Robins martinrobins@btinternet.com. The price is $20.00 including postage. |
