Coal Mines Idled in West Virginia

February 25, 2026 - Coal mines in Harrison and Marion counties were idled Monday and are likely to be idled again on Tuesday.

The United Mine Workers of America confirmed to Nexstar’s WBOY that mines operated by American Consolidated Natural Resources had been idled. In north-central West Virginia, ACNR operates mines in Harrison and Marion counties. It also has mines in Marshall and Ohio counties, according to its website.

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey responded to the situation during a press conference in Charleston Tuesday, saying it appeared several workers would be going back to work on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday.

“There’s been a lot of back and forth between the company and the Soil Conservation District and some issues on the on the permitting… We’ve handled it correctly. I know that there are some disputes. I’m not going to go back into, you know, who’s disagreeing with who right now,” Morrisey said. “What I was briefed on before coming up here. That was the last question I asked: ‘Where are we on that?’ And they said, ‘It looks like a lot of people are going back this afternoon and first full shift tomorrow.'”
