A Message from the SME Board President: Call for Nominations
May 2, 2026 - Below is a message from Mary Korpi, SME 2026 Board President.
| As SME Board President, I am asking for your help in identifying the leaders who will guide our Society in the years ahead. The SME Nominating Committee is now accepting nominations for the 2029 SME President, 2028-2031 SME Board of Directors, and 2027-2030 committee roles. |

| Please nominate a colleague you respect (or nominate yourself) and encourage candidates who reflect the breadth of our membership across experience, geography, and specialties. |

| The SME President and Board Directors steward SME and represent all members through vision, leadership, and engagement. They model our mission and ethics and uphold strong governance and fiscal stewardship. We value sustained SME service, proven senior leadership, and industry accomplishments, along with a commitment to grow membership and strengthen partnerships and sponsorships. Directors act as visible SME ambassadors, prioritize Board meetings, and commit the required time, including travel at their own expense. SME Foundation support remains strongly encouraged, and 100% Board participation matters. |

- 2029 SME President
- 2028–2031 SME Board Directors
- 2027–2030 SME Committee Members
- Including the Strategic Committees: Association Growth; Industry Innovation; Industry Workforce; Responsible Mining and Underground Construction
- Standing Committees: Audit; Finance; Structure & Governance
You may nominate a colleague or submit a self-nomination.
We are looking for SME members who:
- Want to lead
- Can attend 2+ in-person meetings each year (MINEXCHANGE and Midyear) plus scheduled virtual meetings

Confirm your commitment to attend meetings, select your committee, and write a brief statement covering your history of SME involvement and why you want to be considered for the role or committee by July 1, 2026. The SME Nominating Committee will vet submissions, review candidates, select nominees at the Midyear Meeting, and notify them in November. |

On a personal note, serving on the Board has been one of the most meaningful ways I’ve contributed to SME. This role brings you into thoughtful conversations with dedicated volunteers and staff, gives you a direct view of our strategy and impact, and lets you help make decisions that strengthen our community and the profession.
