Omer Mason Bunn, Retired Coal Operator, Passes
November 2, 2015 - Omer Mason Bunn, 93 years of age, of Abingdon, Virginia, passed away on October 28, 2015 (Formerly of Grundy, Virginia.) He was born June 30, 1922 on Beech Fork in Lavalette, West Virginia. The Son of Eris and Ina Davis Bunn. Omer was married 61 years to Sadie Fry Bunn until her passing in 2003.
Omer served his country in World War II as a surgical technician with the 621st Medical Clearing Company of the United States Army in the European Theater. He participated in D-Day and Battle of the Bulge. He held five battle stars for his participation in the fighting at Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe.
He was a coal operator for 55 years, starting in East Lynn, West Virginia shortly after discharge from the Army. He later had mining operations in Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky.
He served for 14 years as a Board Member on the State of Virginia Port Authority. He was honored as the recipient of West Virginia Coal Miners Hall of Fame in 2005. He served as the first President of Miners & Merchants (now TruPoint Bank) in Grundy. He was a member of Grundy Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sadie, his parents and brothers Maxwell Bunn, Benny Bunn, Delmus Bunn and Homer Bunn, his sisters, Claudia Dunkle and Zelda Bunn.
He is survived by his children, Edwin Bunn (Lynn), James Omer Bunn (Kay) and Brenda Polly Cardwell. His grandchildren, Jane Menard, Nick Cardwell, Jim Bunn II, Becky Pittman, Joseph Bunn, Katy Davidson, Andy Bunn, sister Joann Ross and 14 great grandchildren.
The family would also like to recognize his special friend and nurse, Lucy Looney and caregivers Bradley Nuckles, Andy Bunn, Donna Osborne, Rhonda Wade, Nancy Reese, Barbara Rutledge and Naomi Barrett and all of his nurses with Wellmont Hospice.
